Team of the Decade: Matt Donnan

Matt Donnan has been selected in our 2010-2019 Men’s Team of The Decade as a reserve defender. Matt is the 2016 Best and Fairest Winner. Coach George Traikovski provides a recollection of Matt’s performances with the Club.

I first saw Matt Donnan playing for Duncan Ryan’s senior team in the Provisional 3 South East League back in 2012. The first thing that I noticed about him was that he was an excellent passer of the ball, rarely did he give away possession.

Back then he was young, lean, and raw  but already it was plain to see he was to become a really good player. Strong in the air, hard in the tackle,  he had the finesse when he had the ball to distribute it cleanly and efficiently.

Fast forward to 2019 and although Matt has played sporadically in the Men’s State 4 squad this year because of his work commitments, when he has played he has been a great inclusion for the team. A natural leader by his actions rather than words , he is admired by both his team mates and coaching staff.

Congratulations on making the Melbourne Uni SC squad of the decade Matt.
